We are offering a Master thesis position in a cutting-edge interdisciplinary project focused on
the development of sustainable, bio-based wood composites. The project combines
synthetic biology, materials science, and AI-driven optimization to create high-performance,
programmable materials for construction and beyond.
Project Scope
The project aims to bridge genetic design, material formulation, and functional performance,
establishing a platform for the next generation of living, multifunctional construction
materials.
- Development and optimization of wood-based composite formulations
- Pretreatment and structuring of biogenic filler materials
- Integration of biopolymers and functional additives to improve material performance
- Investigation of microbial processes for bio-adhesion and surface modification
- Implementation of automated workflows and digital tools for material testing and
analysis
The project explores how engineered biology can enhance structure, interfaces, and
performance in next-generation wood composites.
Your Profile
- Enrolled in a master’s program in Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Materials Science, or
related field - Interest in synthetic biology, sustainability, and interdisciplinary research
- Experience in lab work or coding (e.g. Python) is a plus
- Motivated, reliable, and able to work both independently and collaboratively
We Offer
- Supervision in a dynamic, cross-disciplinary research environment
- Access to lab automation, material testing, and biological engineering tools
- Opportunity to contribute to real prototypes and potentially co-author publications
